BAFTA TV Awards 2021: Richard Ayoade wins fans with one liners and takes cheeky swipe at Big Narstie

Richard Ayoade delighted viewers with his dry one liners and witty sense of humour as he hosted the BAFTA TV Awards 2021 on Sunday.

The actor, 44, ripped into Normal People’s Paul Mescal, 25, calling him an ‘absolute b*****d’ and teased actor Greg Davies, 53, during the ceremony, leaving some fans to say he ‘smashed’ the presenting gig.

However, Richard divided opinion as he took a very cheeky swipe at Big Narstie, 35, over his chaotic video acceptance speech after winning the Comedy Entertainment Programme category.

Going for it: Richard Ayoade delighted viewers with his dry one liners and witty sense of humour as he hosted the BAFTA TV Awards 2021 in London on Sunday

After hearing that his series The Big Narstie show had been victorious, the rapper started to speak and his pals spoke over him chanting ‘speech, speech, speech’.

When Big Narstie did manage to start thanking the cast and crew, one of the excited men with him repeated the words and made it hard to hear what was going on.

Before the camera went from the chaotic video call to the studio, one of the team shouted: ‘Everyone doubted you now Narstie, now you’ve won a BAFTA.’

Once the camera was back on him, Richard ensured to keep a straight-face as he declared: ‘Don’t do drugs.’

‘He’s an absolute b*****d’: The presenter, 44, had the audience laughing when he cheekily sweared while talking about Normal People’s Paul Mescal following the actor’s speech

Joke: Richard divided opinion as he took a cheeky swipe at Big Narstie, 35, over his chaotic video acceptance speech after winning the Comedy Entertainment Programme category, with the rapper joined by co-host Mo Gilligan and the show’s producers for the call

Although getting a few laughs in the socially-distanced venue, some viewers at home thought Richard’s jibe was a little harsh, saying that it was a ‘cheap laugh’.

One tweeted: ‘Implying everyone from the big narstie show is on drugs for a cheap laugh………probably means you need to try harder at comedy #BAFTAS’

And another added: ‘Oucchh @RichardAyoade saying ‘Don’t do drugs’ after @MoTheComedian and @bignarstie won an award’

Richard also cheekily ripped into Normal People star Paul Mescal, who won in the Lead Actor category and dedicated his award to co-star Daisy Edgar Jones.

Not impressed: But others thought Richard was making a ‘cheap laugh’ with the comment

After Paul delivered a sweet speech thanking the show’s team and his family, Richard quipped that the actor is ‘an absolute b****d’ as he left the stage.

While elsewhere during the show, Richard dropped another of his one-liners at the expense of Greg Davies who was speaking with the nominees for Best Female Performance in a Comedy Programme.

Although trying to make conversation and be witty, it seemed as if some of the stars were not hearing his comments which created a rather awkward silent moment.

Richard then interjected by sarcastically saying: ‘Zoom is great for banter, isn’t it Greg?’

‘It’s one of the best moments in BAFTA Awards history!’: Viewers were also entertained by the savage comment, with one person calling Richard a ‘legend’ on Twitter

And there was more Zoom-related jokes when the cast of Casualty accepted the award for Soap And Continuing Drama via the video platform.

The stars appeared from the show’s set via Zoom, but it seemed the router may need some adjustments as their speech was plagued by a poor connection.

Nothing the technical difficulties, a fixture of many awards in 2021 due to the reliance on Zoom and satellite technology, Richard ended the speech with the words: ‘Get a new router.’

Several people watching the show praised Richard for his sense of humour and unforgiving quips about several of the nominees on the night.

Oh dear! Despite trying to keep its attendees safe during the pandemic, the ceremony wasn’t without tech issues as the cast of Casualty accepted the Soap And Continuing Drama award

Taking to Twitter during the show, one person penned: ‘And the #BAFTA for everything in the the entire universe goes to… Richard Ayoade!’

And another penned: ‘Can Richard Ayoade just host and other star in everything from now on? I’m officially done with awards ceremonies but he makes everything great. #BAFTAS’

While someone else added: ‘All award shows should be hosted by Richard Ayoade please and thank you.’

Also singing the comedian’s praises, another fan wrote: ‘Award shows can be dull but Richard Ayoade presenting and making comments on every winner and moment has made the BAFTA tv awards hilarious.’

Loving it: Several BAFTA Award viewers applauded Richard’s presenting style, with some saying he ‘smashed’ the gig and should present all the award shows

Sunday’s BAFTA TV Awards celebrated and rewarded the very best programmes and performances of 2020.
