Australia’s unemployment rate has fallen to 4.9 per cent for the month of June, however Treasurer Josh Frydenberg concedes the New South Wales lockdown “will have an impact on the labour market”. Mr Frydenberg said the federal government is “very much focused on ensuring that the New South Wales businesses and households get that support that they need through this lockdown.” “If New South Wales is successful in beating back the virus and this outbreak, then Australia is better for it.” Today’s figures mark the first time in 10 years the unemployment rate has fallen to below five per cent despite government predictions the figure would sit at 5.5 per cent for the June quarter.
